Planning a Wedding in Toronto's Distillery District: A Photographer's Guide

If you're considering a wedding in Toronto's Distillery District, you're already starting with one of the most unique backdrops in the city.

I've had the chance to photograph a wedding here, and one of the things I love most about the Distillery District is that you don't have to go searching for a beautiful photo location — they're everywhere.

From the cobblestone streets and historic brick buildings to the little alleyways, doorways, courtyards and architectural details, the entire area is filled with little pockets that can be used for photographs.

Plan to Explore — Don't Just Pick One Spot

This is probably my biggest tip for couples getting married at the Distillery District.

Don't think of your wedding portraits as happening in one single location.

Instead, think of the entire neighbourhood as your backdrop.

You might start with a beautiful architectural portrait against one of the historic brick buildings, walk a few steps and find a quiet little doorway for something more intimate, then turn a corner and suddenly have a completely different backdrop.

There are so many little pockets for photographs.

That's what makes photographing here so much fun — your gallery can feel like you've travelled around Toronto, when really we've just wandered through the Distillery.

Give Yourself Time to Walk

Because the Distillery District is pedestrian-focused, your photography naturally becomes a little more interactive and candid.

I actually love this.

Rather than stopping every few feet for a perfectly posed photograph, I can have you walk together, talk, laugh and interact while I'm looking for those beautiful little moments.

Just remember that you'll be walking on cobblestone, so comfortable shoes are your best friend — especially if we're exploring the area for portraits.

And if you're wearing those gorgeous heels you've been dreaming about? Bring them for the photographs and keep something comfortable nearby for walking between locations. Your feet will thank you!

Use the Architecture

The Distillery District has so much character built right into it.

The old brick, stone, iron details, large windows, wooden doors and industrial architecture create a beautiful contrast against a wedding dress or formal suit.

I love looking for compositions where the architecture frames the couple rather than simply putting you in front of a building.

This is where having a photographer who knows how to look beyond the obvious photo spot can really make a difference.

Don't Forget the Candid Photos

One of the reasons I love photographing weddings in the Distillery District is that it lends itself so naturally to documentary-style photographs.

Instead of everything being perfectly posed, we can capture you walking through the streets, your bridal party laughing together, guests enjoying cocktail hour and all those little in-between moments.

Sometimes my favourite image from a series isn't the one where everyone is looking at the camera — it's the photograph where everyone is laughing because something happened in between.

I don't want to whisk you away from your guests for an hour and have you wondering what you're missing!

A first look can also be a great option if you want to get some portraits done before the ceremony and have more time to enjoy your reception afterward.

The Distillery District can have a very different feel depending on when you're photographing.

Earlier in the day, you can get beautiful clean architectural photographs. Later in the day, the atmosphere becomes more lively, and depending on the season and time of your wedding, the changing light can add a beautiful warmth to your images.

Because the area is a popular destination, it's also worth considering the time of day and any special events or seasonal programming when planning your photography. The District hosts events throughout the year, which can significantly change how busy the area is.

And honestly? I don't always mind a few people in the background.

Sometimes having the Distillery buzzing around you makes the photographs feel more like Toronto.

One practical thing couples should know: professional wedding photography in the Distillery District requires a photography permit unless your wedding/event is booked through Distillery Events, where the permit requirement is handled differently. The District also has guidelines around where and how photography can take place.

This is something your photographer should be aware of before your wedding day — you don't want to be figuring it out when you arrive.

And Don't Forget Your Wedding Party & Family Photos

The Distillery District isn't just great for couple portraits.

The architecture gives us plenty of options for bridal-party photographs and family portraits too.

My goal is to get the important group photographs done efficiently, then spend more time creating the beautiful, natural images of the two of you.
