How to Prep For your Maternity Session
First of all, you do not need to know how to pose! That's my job. Your maternity session should feel like a celebration of you, your growing family and this very special (and very temporary!) stage of life. Whether we're photographing your session in your home, outdoors or at a beautiful location, here are a few tips to help you feel comfortable and confident.
What Should I Wear for My Maternity Session?
The most important thing? Wear something that makes you feel beautiful.
Maternity dresses that are fitted around the bump, flowy and elegant, or have beautiful movement photograph wonderfully. Soft neutrals, creams, whites, earthy tones and muted colours tend to create a timeless look, but your outfit should still feel like you.
If you're deciding between showing off your bump or keeping things a little more covered, both are beautiful. There is absolutely no "right" way to do maternity photos.
Bring More Than One Outfit
I usually recommend bringing 2–3 outfit options if your session allows for it.
You might choose:
- A beautiful fitted maternity dress to show off your bump
- A softer, flowy dress for movement
- A more casual outfit that feels like you
- Something simple and timeless for photographs with your partner or children
And don't forget that sometimes a simple change — taking off a cardigan, changing your shoes or adding a beautiful robe — can give us an entirely different look without needing a full outfit change.
What Should My Partner Wear?
Keep it simple and coordinate rather than perfectly match.
Think neutral, complementary colours and clothing without large logos or busy patterns.
For example, if you're wearing a soft cream or neutral dress, your partner could wear beige, white, tan, grey, navy or another muted tone.
The goal is for you and your bump to be the focus, while everyone's outfits feel cohesive together.
What About Siblings?
If you're bringing your little ones, don't stress too much about getting them to sit still or pose perfectly.
They're kids!
Choose something comfortable that coordinates with the rest of the family, and I'll capture a mixture of those sweet posed moments and the real interactions between you.
Some of my favourite family photographs are the ones where everyone is laughing, cuddling or simply being themselves.
A Few Things to Do Before Your Session
Give Yourself Time
Don't schedule something stressful immediately before your photos.
Give yourself enough time to shower, get ready, have something to eat and arrive feeling relaxed. Pregnancy is exhausting enough — we don't need to add rushing to the list!
Have a Snack
Please don't arrive starving. Have something light to eat before your session and bring water with you. You'll be much more comfortable, especially if we're walking around or changing outfits.
Moisturize Your Skin
If you're planning on showing your belly, moisturize beforehand so your skin feels soft and comfortable.
Just avoid applying anything very oily immediately before the session, especially if we're using gowns or fabrics that need to stay in place.
Bring Comfortable Shoes
Even if you're wearing beautiful heels for some photographs, bring flats or comfortable shoes too.
We'll move around, and there is absolutely no reason to spend your entire maternity session waddling around in uncomfortable shoes. 😂
You can always change into your pretty shoes when we're ready for those photographs.
Don't Forget the Little Details
If there are meaningful items you'd like included, bring them!
Ultrasound photos, tiny baby shoes, a special piece of jewellery, your baby's first outfit or something sentimental can make beautiful detail photographs.
You don't need to bring a whole suitcase. Just a few things that have meaning to you.
And If You Have Other Children…
This is a big one:
Don't worry if they don't cooperate.
We can take breaks. We can let them run around. We can get the silly photos out of the way. We can bribe them with snacks. 😂
I'll work with their energy rather than against it.
We'll capture the sweet cuddles, kisses and little moments between you — and sometimes those unplanned moments end up being the photographs you love the most.
Most Importantly — Don't Stress About Your Body
Your body is doing something pretty incredible.
You don't need to worry about looking a certain way, posing perfectly or knowing your "good side."
I'll guide you into flattering positions, pay attention to light and angles, and make sure your photographs feel natural and beautiful.
My goal isn't to make you look like someone else.
It's to capture you, your bump and this little person you're waiting to meet.
So come comfortable, come excited and come exactly as you are.
I'll take care of the rest. ❤️
